The Home of the Solvang Roadster Show

Show Rules, and Category “Class” Definitions

Our Goal:

We want to put on an event that will draw Datsun Roadster enthusiasts from all over – Every Year; and second, it’s about having fun with our Roadsters, enjoying the cars, seeing old friends and making new ones, and enjoying beautiful Solvang.

Registration Related Questions:

Q.   I didn’t register in time and I missed the Pre-registration.  Can I register at the show?

A.   Yes.  You can register the day of the show, however the Free T-Shirt is only for the Pre-registered participants.  Registration the day of the show is $60.

Q.    If my Roadster is a project car and I want to bring it to the show, will it qualify for an award?

A.    We are here to celebrate our Datsuns.  If your Datsun can be towed, dragged, pushed or pulled it should be at this event.  If this is the case with your project car you may want to enter it in the Diamond in the Rough Category (see Categories below).

Q.    If I don’t have my registration card for my windshield when I arrive to the show can I still pull in, park and then register or check in?

A.    No. Only cars that have the registration card for the windshield will be allowed through the street barricades to park for the show (Windshield Cards are in the registration packets). If you did not pick up your registration packet the night before then you will have to park outside the show area and walk to the entrance gate and pick your packet or walk to the Main Show booth and register your car.  We know this is a hassle but it helps us keep the parking organized.

 Q.   If I don’t register online and I don’t get my registration mailed in before the deadline, can I register on- site (the day of the show)?

A.    Yes, not everyone is able to register and/or pay online for whatever reason; we know that sometimes getting things in the mail on time can be a challenge. HOWEVER, if you did not get your registration in by April 5th you can register at the Meet & Greet or on the day of the show. Any Registration After April 5th is $60.00, and that is based on the availability of spots.  If the street is full and there is no room for anymore cars registration will be closed.  Late Registration fee does NOT include the Free T-Shirt.  T-Shirts can still be purchased the day of the show.

Some things you need to be aware of; if you plan on registering and paying the day of the event. Pre-registration is important to the organizers; it gives them an idea of how many to plan on and what to prepare for.  By registering the day of the event you are not guaranteed a spot, a goodie bag, or a t-shirt in your size (or one at all), or any other freebies that the pre-registered participant may receive.

Q.  If I register and pay my fees and I can’t make it to the show can I transfer my registration?

A.  Yes, since registration fees are non-refundable you can transfer your registration to another person or to another vehicle (Before April 5, 2019), but please if at all possible let us know if this is the case in advance.  We also need to know the vehicle’s and/or the person’s information that will be taking your spot.

Q.  Can I bring parts to sell?

A.  NO “THIS IS NOT A SWAP MEET”

There will be NO Unauthorized Promotion, Solicitation or Sales of any parts or other business products by non-vendors. This is disrespectful to those sponsors and vendors that have an agreement to being onsite. Violators will be subject to removal from event.  If you wish to be a vendor please contact Harlan@hkassociates.com

Category “Class” Definitions

  • Stock Class definition:

These cars must be in stock condition as they were when originally bought with little to no modifications.  Acceptable modifications are aftermarket and special options from the era, change in interior materials, incorrect grill, deleted side trim and badging, and suspension upgrades (competition type) are still considered stock. The engine must be a stock Roadster engine.  Modifications to the engine such as carbs switched to Solex/Mikuni or Webber are still considered stock.  Aftermarket wheels are considered stock.

EXAMPLE: Smog equipment removal, a Stroker or an H20 in place of an R16 etc., are still considered stock.

  • Modified Class definition:

Any Datsun Roadster that is not in original stock condition due to MAJOR engine enhancements or engine swaps and any modifications to the body that alters its appearance or performance and is still street legal.  For this event, a Stroker or H20 in place of an R16 is not considered modified.

EXAMPLE: Engine swaps or alterations to stock engine greatly increasing performance, turbos, fuelinjection, etc. For this event, a Stroker or H20 is not considered modified.

EXAMPLE: Alteration to body style, fender flares or frenched in lights, deleted side moldings, etc. are not considered modified.

  • Pre 1963 Roadster definition:

These cars must be in stock condition as they were when originally bought with little to no modifications.  Acceptable modifications are aftermarket and special options from the era, change in interior materials, incorrect grill, deleted side trim and badging, and suspension upgrades (competition type) are still considered stock. The engine must be a stock Roadster engine.  Modifications to the engine such as carbs switched to Solex/Mikuni or Webber are still considered stock.  Aftermarket wheels are considered stock.

  • Diamond in the Rough definition:

This class is for the absolute roughest Datsun that the judges feel has the most potential.

  • Datsun Racers definition:

This category is open to all Datsun (NOT NISSAN) racecars regardless of their model.  These cars must obviously be a race car. It doesn’t matter if your car is driven or transported to the track, if it is  a race car, this is your category.  If you aren’t sure if this category or the modified category is for you, send us a picture of your car and we can work it out together.  Engine swaps and suspension changes are OK in this class.

*NOTE: There MUST be at least four (4) cars PRE– registered in this class or the class will be closed and the cars placed in a class of the participant’s choice. Registration fees will still apply.

  • The Best of Show definition:

The Best of Show award is awarded to the absolute best car in attendance at the show as voted on by a group of three non-participating judges.  One award is given for this category.

  • Display Only – Special Interest

We hesitate calling this a “Class” since this is for Display Only and NOT to be Judged.  The Display Only will be reserved for the Restored Rolling Chassis (with or without engine and drive train) and Restored Show Quality Datsun Engines.  These hold a Special Interest for many that want to see how things actually look and run without the body.   It will also include those beautiful Works in Progress that are not completed.  These are the cars that are being professionally restored and are not ready for show, they are too nice for Diamond in the Rough yet not finished enough to enter in a show.   These Works in Progress can be at any stage of completion, but the idea is to be able to allow others to see the work being done, not the finished project; that would go into a different Class.

Judging

  • Only registered participants are eligible for judging.  Each registered participant will receive one (1) voting ballot to be used in judging show cars.
  • Spectators are not eligible for judging.
  • Only one ballot is to be turned in per registered participant.  If a second ballot is needed the original ballot MUST be returned in order to receive a new ballot.
  • Only cars with a registration number posted on windshield are to be judged.
  • Cars with a “DISPLAY ONLY” card on the windshield are NOT TO BE judged.

WINNING First Place or Best of Show

If you should be the lucky one in your category to win First Place or better yet, Best of Show, your car will not be eligible for that same first place award the following year. You can however win other places in your category.  So, if you win First Place this year you are only eligible for Second or Third next year. But the year after that everything resets and you can once again take first.

The same rule goes for Best of Show, if you win Best of Show this year you cannot win it the following year but you are eligible for all other places in other categories. The year after that you are once again eligible for Best of Show.

When you win the Best of Show you are asked to have your car present the following year for display as Best of Show Honoree
